Anaheim’s Hospitality Industry Advocacy Spurs Council Vote on Key Worker Measure
Anaheim, CA - In a significant display of unity, Anaheim/Orange County Hotel & Lodging Association members, hospitality professionals, and industry leaders appeared in large numbers at the Anaheim City Council meeting Tuesday night to advocate for a special election on the proposed hotel and event worker wage initiative. These efforts were successful, as the City Council voted in favor of calling a special election to allow voters to decide on the far-reaching measure.
The urgency for a prompt decision was underscored by two fiscal impact studies commissioned by the City Council, which projected substantial economic repercussions if the initiative were adopted. One report, conducted by Baker Tilly US LLP, estimated that the city-owned Anaheim Convention Center could face increased annual operating costs of up to $8.6 million, potentially reducing funds available for essential public services such as public safety and community programs.
Industry leaders emphasized the economic and operational implications of the initiative and urged prompt voter consideration rather than waiting until the general election in November 2024. The Council ultimately agreed, citing the potential economic risks to Anaheim’s hospitality sector and the need for timely action.
In tandem with the election decision, the City Council also adopted a separate worker safety ordinance to address staff protections, including requirements for security devices and response protocols.
AOCHLA remains dedicated to proactive engagement and advocacy on issues impacting the sector. We will continue to push for equitable and sustainable policies that consider both worker protections and the city's long-term economic well-being. The results of Tuesday evening clearly illustrate this dedication.
